Chapter 8

Daniel closed his laptop as his younger brother stepped into his office. He smiled, glad to see Brodie back from vacation. “Hey, how was the vacation? Catch any fish?”

Brodie raised his eyebrows. “Are you…in a good mood?” he whispered the last part like an obnoxious jackass.

Rolling his eyes, he stood and rounded his desk. “Come on, how was the vacation?”

“All right, who are you and what have you done with my brother?” Brodie grinned, his face more tanned than normal as he strode in wearing jeans and a T-shirt with a familiar surf brand on it. He looked a lot more relaxed than Daniel had seen him in a while. Normally he was in sharp suits and had a “don’t mess with me” expression firmly in place.

“Ha, ha.” He pulled Brodie into a tight hug.

“I’m just saying, it’s the first time in a while you haven’t snarled at me.”

Daniel snorted. “You’re full of it. And you’re in a good mood too.”

“So?”

“So…what? You gonna tell me about your vacation or not?” He leaned against the edge of his desk as Brodie watched him expectantly.

“I caught a bunch of fish, caught up on reading, and didn’t talk to almost anyone for two weeks. It was amazing.”

Daniel knew his brother had basically fallen off-grid, like he often did when he took a couple days away. But Brodie had been gone two weeks this time. Clearly it had been good for him. “Good for you.”

“Now it’s your turn. What’s going on with you? You’re not the sad sack you were a couple weeks ago.”

“She’s going out with me tonight,” he said simply. And he didn’t need to specify who she was either. He could admit that he was nervous too, which was unfamiliar territory for him. But Kathryn had always made him feel like a horny teenager with no moves.

Brodie’s eyes widened slightly. “Good for you. Hope you guys get it right this time.”

Yeah, so did he. He pressed his intercom. “Nicole, reschedule my four thirty and five o’clock. Sorry I didn’t let you know earlier.” He’d been consumed with working on contracts and had forgotten.

There was a short pause, then, “Of course, sir.”

He looked at his brother again. “What are you doing here anyway? Not that I’m not happy to see you.”

“I was on my way home and thought I’d see if you wanted to grab a couple beers, but I know the answer is no.”

He thought about trying to squeeze it in before meeting Kathryn, but there was no way. “Why don’t you call Sienna, see what she’s up to?” He needed to check on his sister too. She’d been so damn cagey lately when he asked her what she was doing.

“Already tried. She answered the phone, said she just wanted to make sure it wasn’t an emergency, then hung up on me.” Brodie grinned slightly.

“So I’m the second choice? That’s cold, man.” He grabbed his laptop case off his desk and motioned that he was going to head out.

“My plan was always to ask both of you.
